Sugaring off in Lower Canada, ca. 1837, by Philip John Bainbrigge

This is one of the rare period illustrations of this popular springtime activity.

Philip John Bainbrigge (1817-1881), a member of the British Army's Royal Engineers, was posted to Canada from 1836 to 1842. Like many military artists, he often painted the places he visited in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes.

The National Archives holds over 175 of Bainbrigge's watercolours.
