Room in priest's house occupied by Mrs. Ellice, 1838

In 1837-1838, rebellions took place in both Upper and Lower Canada. In Lower Canada, there was widespread discontent with the government, inflamed by resurgent nationalism, an influx of British immigrants and economic distress. Militants of the Patriot Party, led by Louis-Joseph Papineau, waged an unsuccessful armed uprising.

On the night of November 4, 1838, a group of Patriots attacked Beauharnois and captured the seigneur, Edward Ellice, and his wife Jane, along with fellow Loyalists. During her short-lived captivity, Jane Ellice drew this room in the presbytery where she was held prisoner.
