Woodcutters were frequently mentioned in Canadian folklore and literature, and they were also favourite subjects for many painters. Clarence Gagnon (1881-1942), engraver and painter, studied in Montréal and later in Paris. Even early in his career, the high quality of his engravings won him a gold medal at the St. Louis Exhibition in 1904. Exhibitions of his work have been held in major North American cities and in London, Argentina, Paris and India. For the deluxe edition of Louis Hémon's classic Canadian novel, Maria Chapdelaine, he produced 54 exquisite illustrations which are in the collection of the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario.
