Playwright, director, actor and film producer, Gratien Gélinas (1909-1999) laid the base for the development of contemporary theater in Quebec. His play, Tit-Coq, created in 1948, centred around a young soldier of illegitimate birth who is sent off to war and returns to find his hopes for the future dashed. The tensions in Quebec society are woven into the play which was a triumph across Canada. The film version was Canada's Film of the Year in 1953. Gélinas' plays include Bousille et les justes and Hier les enfants dansaient. He founded the Comédie-Canadienne in 1957 and was chairman of the Canadian Film Development Corporation from 1969 to 1978. He has left his mark on the cultural life of Canada. Charcoal C-144966 |
