Painter, writer and evangelist William Kurelek (1946-1977) was born in Alberta of Ukrainian heritage, and grew up on farms in that province and in Manitoba. In 1957, he converted to Roman Catholicism and remained deeply religious. This drawing is a sketch for a series of 160 paintings depicting the Passion of St. Matthew, which he considered his major work. Kurelek gained an international reputation and by the time of his death was one of the most successful Canadian artists of his generation. His books for children have become modern Canadian classics. The William Kurelek Fonds at the National Archives consists of the artist's personal and professional records and many works of documentary art. Pencil on wove paper C-145128 |
