Poet, editor, critic and professor, Eli Mandel (1922-1990) was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, the son of Russian Jewish parents. Growing up on the Prairies during the Depression left its mark on his work. He wrote eight books of poetry including Fuseli Poems, Black and Secret Man, Out of Place and Dreaming Backwards. His third book of poems, An Idiot Joy, won a Governor General's Award in 1968. The artist, Harold Town (1924-1990), captures something of the poet's compassionate but pessimistic nature. Mandel seems to carry the weight of the world on his slumped shoulders. Brush and black ink C-100378 |
