S.S. Empress of Ireland, ca. 1914

Struck by a Norwegian coal carrier, the Empress of Ireland sank with 1,014 passengers on board during the night of May 29, 1914, off the shores at Rimouski, Quebec.

Only 465 passengers survived. The bodies that were recovered were buried at Métis-sur-Mer where a monument was erected in their memory.
