The "Toronto No. 2" locomotive, May 1853

Built in James Good's Toronto Locomotive Works, the "Toronto No. 2," destined for the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Union Railway, was probably the first locomotive produced in British North America.

Railway construction gave colonial industry an unprecedented push. Without the building of the coast-to-coast Canadian Pacific Railway, the political union of the British colonies of North America would probably not have occurred.
