Sir John A. Macdonald, 1883, by William James Topley
|
Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-1891), "Father of Confederation" and Canada's first Prime Minister, was the dominant force behind the union of the provinces that created the Dominion of Canada. He served as Prime Minister from 1867 to 1873 and again from 1878 to his death in 1891. During his tenure, the nation expanded from sea to sea. When Sir John A. died, Wilfrid Laurier, Leader of the Opposition and future Prime Minister, expressed the feelings of many Canadians:"... the place of Sir John A. Macdonald in this country was so large and so absorbing that it is almost impossible to conceive that the politics of this country will continue without him. His loss overwhelms us." C-005329 |
