Elders with Amerindian soldiers in Canadian Expeditionary Force uniforms, ca. 1916, photographer unknown

"The war proved that the fighting spirit of my tribe was not squelched through reservation life. When duty called, we were there, and when we were called forth to fight for the cause of civilization, our people showed all the bravery of our warriors of old."
--Mike Mountain Horse, First World War veteran

Between 3,500 and 4,000 Amerindians, in other words, close to 35 percent of eligible Amerindian males, served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War.

These men had enlisted voluntarily, since Amerindians were exempt from conscription. The majority of these soldiers came from Ontario and they served in all branches of the Armed Forces.
