Private H.E. Godard, April 15, 1945, by Jack H. Smith

More than a million Canadians served in the armed forces during the Second World War. Here Private Godard carries a Bren gun as he advances through a forest north of Arnhem, Holland. Godard was a member of the Perth Regiment of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division.

Canadian troops played a major role in the liberation of Holland, a time called by the Dutch a "Canadian summer" after a harsh winter of starvation and dwindling fuel supplies. Canada's role in the liberation has forged a deep and long-lasting bond between the two countries.
