The Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge was unveiled in 1936 by King Edward VIII. The massive monument's 20 statues were carved where they now stand from huge blocks of limestone. On the monument walls are the names of 11,285 Canadians who died in France and whose graves are unknown. More than 7,000 of Canada's dead are buried in war cemeteries near Vimy. The unknown Canadian soldier, whose remains rest in the tomb at the foot of Canada's National War Memorial in Ottawa, was one of the many who fell in this historic battle. PA-207563 |
