Snow in the streets, Quebec City, ca. 1870-1880, by L.P. Vallée

Winter is more than a season in Canada, it is part of our culture, of our national soul. Gilles Vigneault (1928-), the celebrated Quebec singer, song-writer and poet has summed it up well in the chorus of his song Mon pays:

In literal translation:

My country is not a country, it is winter
My garden is not a garden, it is a plain
My road is not a road, it is snow
My country is not a country, it is winter.
