| More than 200 years ago, HMS Pegasus cast anchor in St. John's. The ship's captain was His Royal Highness Prince William Henry (1765-1837), who would become King William IV in 1830. The Prince was the first member of the British royal family to set foot on the land that would one day be known as Canada. In addition to Newfoundland, he visited Halifax and Cornwall, where the recently arrived Loyalists were settling in. His visit strengthened the place of the monarchy in the minds of Canadians.
