Born in France in 1722, Dominique Serres enlisted in the navy. Captured on the high seas by the English fleet during the Seven Years War, he sailed with them on the expeditions to Nova Scotia and Havana. He was later appointed "official painter of maritime conflicts" by King George III and in 1792, one year before his death, Librarian of the Royal Academy.
