Marguerite d'Youville, postage stamp design, 1978, by Antoine Dumas

Postage stamps are works of art which enrich the study of societies.

Widowed in 1730, Marguerite d'Youville raised her two children and continued to manage the family business in Montreal. With four other women, in 1737, she opened a hospice for the elderly, abandoned children and orphans. This community became the Sisters of Charity of Montreal's General Hospital, commonly known as the "Grey Nuns."

In 1991, Marguerite d'Youville became the first Canadian woman to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.
