Canoe Manned by Voyageurs Passing a Waterfall, 1869, by Frances Anne Hopkins (1838-1919)

The voyageurs and their canoes have always captured the Canadian imagination.

Frances Anne Hopkins (born Beechey) belonged to a noted family of artists. She married Edward Martin Hopkins, Secretary to Sir George Simpson, Superintendent General of the Hudson's Bay Company.

On several occasions, she accompanied her husband and the Superintendent on their inspection tours of the Company's outposts. The woman in the middle of the canoe might be the artist herself.

As none of these famous canoes have been preserved in museums, this faithful depiction is unique and very valuable.
