Jeanne Sauvé, Governor General of Canada, by Yousuf Karsh

Jeanne Sauvé (1922-1993), journalist and politician, was Governor General of Canada from 1984 to 1990. As well as being the first female to hold that office, she was the first woman elected to Parliament from the province of Quebec, the first female French-Canadian federal Cabinet minister and the first female Speaker of the House of Commons.

The National Archives acquired Yousuf Karsh's photographic production from the opening of his Ottawa studio in 1932 to March 30, 1987. The Karsh Fonds consists of 250,000 black-and-white negatives, approximately 50,000 proofs and some 170,000 colour transparencies.
