Torah of the Shearith Israel Congregation, 17th Century

This 17th-century Torah was given to the Jewish community of Montreal in 1768, by friends in England. It was used for over two centuries in the Montreal synagogue, the oldest in Canada.

Rolled around two wands, the parchment contains the text of the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Torahs are always handwritten on parchment (sheepskin) according to strict rites.

The Shearith Israel Congregation authorized the showing of this extraordinary manuscript.
