Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919), ca. 1880, by William J. Topley

"Canada has been the inspiration of my life. I have had it before me as a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day, a policy of true Canadianism, of moderation... of conciliation..."
--Sir Wilfrid Laurier

Leader of the Liberal Party from 1887 to 1919 and Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911, Laurier was Canada's major political figure at the turn of the century.

An astute politician and master of compromise, he defended national unity at a time when industrialization and urbanization were profoundly changing Canada's social and economic scene.

The fonds of photographer William J. Topley (1845-1930) contains over 150,000 photographs that have been widely used by filmmakers, television producers and illustrators.
