A Ukrainian pioneer wedding, 1911, by Dr. G. E. Dragan

Between 1891 and 1914, over 150,000 Ukrainians settled on the Prairies between Winnipeg and Edmonton. Most asked for land and started clearing it, often under extremely difficult conditions. The Canadian government of the time, wishing to bring farmers to the Prairies, encouraged this migration.

The Ukrainian settlers brought with them their farming experience, their own peasant technology and their architecture, as illustrated by the farm building in the photograph's background.
