During one of his numerous trips to Canada, Edward Roper, painter and illustrator, met a settler of Scottish descent who told him of his hard times in Manitoba in 1878. With the help of his family, using a few tools and two pairs of oxen, he had built a log house where he had lived with his family for eight years. Edward Roper (ca. 1832-1904), in his many works in the Archives collection, has given us information on the geography, houses and various aspects of the lives of the pioneers. The quality of his paintings is remarkable. Oil on canvas C-11030 |
