Harvesting Hay, Sussex, New Brunswick, ca. 1880, by William George Richardson Hind (1833-1889)

Hind was born in England but followed his older brother to Canada in 1852. He travelled throughout Canada, drawing, sketching and painting, and finally settled in New Brunswick.

This painting, typical of his work, shows a perspective of meticulously differentiated trees, fields and tiny buildings recorded with minute, almost microscopic brush strokes. When this painting was offered at a Toronto auction in 1982, the Archives, convinced that it was one of Hind's important pieces, acquired it. The Archives holds 260 of Hind's works in its collection of documentary art.
