Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was born in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, and her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, was published in 1908. The heroine, "Anne with the hair as red as carrots," was to become a bestseller throughout the world. In the course of her career, Lucy Maud Montgomery published over 20 novels, including seven sequels to Anne, the Emily of New Moon trilogy, 450 poems, some 500 short stories and 5,000 pages of diaries.
