Victoria (1819-1901), Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, appears in this double portrait as the young ruler and in the fullness of her years. Victoria ascended the throne at age 18 in 1837. In 1857, she chose Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada, and in 1867 it became the capital of the new Dominion. The Queen was always interested in her colonial subjects, here represented by one of our national symbols, the beaver. Queen Victoria may have more public buildings, streets, places and landscape features named after her than any other person in Canadian history. Print C-039048 |
