Norman McLaren, 1981, by Laurence Hyde (1914-1987)

Critics place Norman McLaren (1914-1987) among the first rank of film animators in the world. Joining the National Film Board in 1941, he explored a variety of animation techniques, including painting on film, scratching directly on film, and paper cut-outs. His award-winning films, including Begone Dull Care, Neighbours, Blinkity-Blank and Pas de Deux, are celebrated for breaking new ground.

The Archives has more than 400,000 photographs and 2,400 films produced by the National Film Board.
