A. Berthelot, by Jean-Joseph Girouard, 1839

Dr. Amable Berthelot was a member of the Patriote Party, the name given to the popular movement that led the Rebellion of 1837-1838 in Lower Canada (Québec). He was arrested and detained because he was suspected of preparing to overthrow the British colonial government.

Jean-Joseph Girouard drew 67 portraits of his fellow prisoners when he was held in a Montréal jail in 1839. He drew from their shadows projected onto paper tacked on the prison wall. Each prisoner's portrait gives his name, age, profession and date of imprisonment.
