Leonard Cohen, 1976, by Roloff Beny

Poet, novelist, singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen (b. 1934) has had an international following for more than 30 years. He has written two novels, eight volumes of poetry and many albums.

His works express the range of his vision - from the lyrical and romantic to the dark and despairing - a very personal mixture of poetry, pessimism and redemption.

"If your life is a leaf
That the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love
That is graceful and green as a stem."
--From Cohen's song Sisters of Mercy

Photographer Roloff Beny (1924-1984) began as a painter and graphic artist but is best remembered as a photographer and designer of lavishly-illustrated coffee table books based on his travels. His estate donated his photographic and manuscript records to the Archives. Within the collection were about 500 portraits including this one.
