Anne Hébert, 1986, by Harry Palmer

Poet, playwright, novelist, Anne Hébert (1916-2000) began writing at an early age and published her first poetry collection, Les songes en équilibre, in 1942. In 1954, she moved to Paris, a place more conducive to the dark style and subject matter of her writing. Although Paris became her home, Québec remained her inspiration.

Her best-known novel, Kamouraska, earned her France's Prix des Librairies and was made into a film by Claude Jutra. In 1978, Hébert won the Prix David, Québec's most prestigious literary prize, in honour of the totality of her work.
