Reforms in Time Reckoning, Sir Sandford Fleming, ca. 1891

Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915) can rightly be called the "Father of Standard Time" as well as being the Chief Engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the designer of Canada's first adhesive postage stamp, the Three-Penny Beaver.

This gifted engineer, scientist, designer and author was one of the most creative minds of his time. Through his involvement in the development of railways he became very aware of the inadequacies of traditional means of establishing the correct time. Fleming proposed twenty-four standard time zones for the entire earth. By the beginning of the twentieth century his concept had been adopted world-wide.
