In 1845, Naval officer and arctic explorer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) sailed with two vessels, the Erebus and the Terror, in search of the Northwest Passage. They never returned. Sir John and all 128 hands perished when the ships were frozen in the ice. The drama of his death has overshadowed his great achievements in charting the Arctic coasts. The only explorer who added more to the coastal map of Canada is Captain George Vancouver. Negelen's engraving was after a work by D.J. Pound. The National Archives holds many collections related to the Canadian North including maps, photographs, manuscripts, artworks and films. Engraving C 005150 |
