Diary of Lady Macdonald, midnight, April 23rd, 1868

Susan Agnes Macdonald (1836-1920) was the second wife of Sir John A. Macdonald, the first prime minister of Canada. On the first page of the diary, she resolved not to discuss politics but, as this page shows, she could not keep her resolution. An excerpt:

Yesterday Sir John announced M. Cartier's Baronetcy — the House applauded — he is now Sir George — he has been and is a useful man, and honest which is saying a good deal — It often strikes me how the politicians... who as the popular phrase goes tried to "feather their nests" have [sunk] pretty much [to] oblivion, [unlike Sir John] & M. Cartier, [sic] of the faults they may have had — yet free from that one.

The diary is unique, as nothing like it exists for any other prime minister's wife.
