The Inuit Hunter Canadian postage stamp was issued on February 21, 1955. Before the 1950s, stamps were designed by artists employed by the printers of the stamps. At that time, the Post Office Department began to request designs from other Canadian artists and designers, the process which is followed today. Thomas Beament, the creator of this design, served in the Navy in both World Wars, the second time as an official war artist. After the War he devoted himself to art and teaching. His favourite subjects were marine and Inuit and his work is represented in several collections including those of the National Gallery of Canada and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. His fonds at the National Archives includes some 1000 drawings and over 500 photographs POS 003904 POS 003905 POS 003906 |
