The Cabots (1497-1509)

Harrisse, Henry (1829-1910). Jean et Sébastien Cabot, leur origine et leurs voyages [...] d'après des documents inédits. Paris: E. Leroux, 1882.

Title page: Jean et Sébastien Cabot, leur origine et leurs voyages.

For a long time the adventures of John and Sebastian Cabot were shrouded in mystery because of the scarcity and unreliability of the documents. In the absence of an extant log or authentic account, John Cabot's two voyages could be reconstructed only from a few scattered allusions. Moreover, during the first half of the sixteenth century, John's discoveries came to be credited gradually to Sebastian, who did nothing to try to correct that mistake in his lifetime.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the leadership of the two expeditions really headed by the father was still attributed to the son. However, Spanish, Venetian, Milanese and English documents discovered during the same century allowed historian Henry Harrisse to set matters straight and attribute the paternity of the discovery of North America to John Cabot.
