The story of these books' creation is told in Ghost of the Hardy Boys : An Autobiography by Leslie MacFarlane (Toronto : Methuen/Two Continents, c1976). Although they are formula books, they have captured the interest of many a reluctant reader and in the process opened doors to literature.
