NEW FRANCE ONLINE: 22,000 DOCUMENTS
NOW AVAILABLE
Ottawa, May 13, 2002 The National Archives of Canada, the Archives de France and the Canadian Embassy in France announce the online arrival of more than 22,000 digitized documents about the administration of New France. The documents come from the Colonies fonds (series C11A) held at the Centre des archives d'outre-mer at Aix-en-Provence, France.
This partnership with the Archives de France will continue for the next two years, and is part of the Canada-France 2004 Program to celebrate 400 years of dialogue and exploration between France and Canada. In successive stages, the two countries will digitize many textual documents, maps and architectural plans covering the period from the first French explorations in the 16th century to the end of the French regime in 1763. Once complete, this large-scale project will have added more than 630, 000 images to Canadian and French content on the Internet.
To see the 22,000 documents and their archival descriptions, go to the National Archives of Canada Web site. Once there, go to the Archives' online research tool,
ArchiviaNet, click on Alphabetical List of Research Tools and select Colonial Archives.
In November 2003, the National Archives of Canada and the Archives de France will launch a virtual exhibition highlighting some of these documents.
