Summary:
Low returns of Fraser River sockeye salmon in 2009 were most likely caused by poor physical and biological conditions in the Strait of Georgia, cumulative effects of high temperatures in the Fraser River, and various environmental stressors. To reverse the current decline in Fraser River sockeye productivity we must direct science towards specific management outcomes; create and maintain a comprehensive public database for BC salmon stocks; and put greater emphasis on salmon conservation in management plans and policies.
