The Wordsmiths

Translation (TR)

Some relevant fields of study: Translation, Terminology, Interpreting, Localization.

Our translation officers are among our most specialized groups. They must have a university degree in translation. Although they usually work with English and French, some provide services in other languages too. Roles include:

  • Transferring a written text from one language to another, while respecting the meaning and style of the message
  • Acting as an intermediary between two or more speakers who do not speak the same language
  • Documenting technical terms, drafting definitions and standardizing usage
  • Translating software, web sites and other multimedia products, as well as adapting them for specific languages and cultures
  • Managing small teams

Salary range from $48,995 to $100,447

The Technical Wizards

Computer Systems and Information Management/Information Technology (CS/IM/IT)

Some relevant fields of study: For graduates who studied in: Computer Programming, Computer Science, Computer Systems, Computer Engineering Technology, Mathematics, Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, Information Technology.

Our computer systems officers take care of the IT infrastructure for one of the largest departments within the Government of Canada. Computer systems officers use leading-edge technology in a fast-paced and service-oriented environment, either individually or as part of a team. Roles include:

  • Configuring new hardware

Purchasing and Supply (PG)

As part of the Government of Canada's main purchasing arm, our procurement officers help departments define requirements, prepare statements of work and get the goods and services they need at the right price. They average 60,000 contracts, totaling $10 billion, annually. Roles include:

  • Developing and maintaining effective customer relations
  • Confirming prices and delivery service with suppliers

Communications and Marketing (Information Services – IS)

Some relevant fields of study: Communications, Marketing, Media, Multimedia, New Media, Liberal Arts, Fine Arts, Journalism, Public Affairs, Policy Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, Advertising, Public Relations, Mass Communications, English or French Literature.

Communications officers get the department's message out to employees, the media, the public and other government departments and agencies. Although the work of marketing officers is complementary, they focus more on changing behavior, including the take-up of the department's services. Roles include:

  • Providing advice and recommendations
  • Drafting and implementing strategic plans
  • Preparing publications, news releases, speeches and other materials to promote programs, policies and services

Our financial administration officers perform complex financial operations for PWGSC and the Receiver General of Canada. Roles include:

Economics and Social Sciences (EC)

Some relevant fields of study: Humanities, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Economics, Arts, Sociology, Statistics, Political Science, Philosophy, History, Human Rights, Classical Studies, Accounting, Commerce, Finance, Business Administration.

Our economics and social sciences officers use research to chart and explore new territory. They may conduct primary research or analyze secondary sources found in archives, libraries, museums or galleries. Roles include:

  • Conducting research, analysis and evaluation of economic or sociological issues
  • Forecasting
  • Applying, analyzing and evaluating statistics, survey methods and systems
  • Developing, analyzing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative information, editing legislation or conducting studies

The Operators

Heating, Power and Stationary Plant (HP)
General Labour and Trades (GL)

Some relevant fields of study: Stationary or Power Engineer, Building Systems Technology.

Both types of operators are involved in the maintenance of building systems. Roles include:

  • Operating electrical and mechanical building systems efficiently, effectively and safely, while factoring in environmental issues such as energy conservation
  • Operating complex, computerized and automated building control systems
  • Diagnosing problems and identifying qualified personnel or contractors to deal with them

Salary range from $20.03 per hour to $40.12 per hour.
