THE GULF AND KUWAIT MEDAL

The Gulf and Kuwait Medal was awarded to members of the Canadian Forces who were part of the coalition effort during the 1990-91 Gulf War.

Recipients of the Medal required a minimum of thirty days of cumulative service in the theatre of operations on or after August 2, 1990, to the end of the commitment. Those who served in the theatre of operations during the period beginning on January 16, 1991, and ending March 3, 1991 were awarded a medal and bar. The Gulf and Kuwait Medal could have been awarded posthumously.

The Gulf and Kuwait Medal consists of a circular medal of copper and zinc. On the obverse appears the crowned effigy of Her Majesty, circumscribed with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA and incorporating the word CANADA at the bottom. On the reverse appears the inscription THE GULF AND KUWAIT 1990-91 LE GOLFE ET KUWAIT surrounded by a laurel wreath, with a maple leaf centred at the bottom. The bar consists of a bar of copper and zinc with a maple leaf in the centre.

The ribbon from which the Medal is suspended is sand coloured, 32 mm in width, with, starting from each outer edge and working toward the centre, a 5 mm air force blue stripe, a 2 mm scarlet stripe and a 5 mm navy blue stripe.

On Armed Forces Day, June 22, 1991, on Parliament Hill, the Governor General awarded the Gulf and Kuwait Medal to a representative group of Forces members who had served in the Gulf War.

The Gulf and Kuwait Medal is part of the Canadian Honours System, established in 1967.
