Women in Canadian Librarianship
and Bibliography: 10 Pioneers

1996 marks the 50th anniversary of both the Canadian Library Association (CLA) and the Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC). To honour the occasion and to celebrate Women's History Month in Canada, the National Library of Canada chose to highlight the achievements of 10 women who have made significant contributions to the development of library services and bibliographical research in Canada.

The 10 women selected represent the various regions of Canada and the various aspects of both librarianship and bibliographical research. They have contributed to the Canadian library community at the local, provincial and national levels. Many of these women were instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian Library Association and served terms as CLA President.

A brief biographical sketch highlights the life and achievements of each "pioneer". This is followed by a list of suggested readings and/or their publications.

We hope that these short biographies will be of interest to you and will inspire you to learn more about these and other Canadian women who have played a pivotal role in early Canadian librarianship and bibliography.
