(1 st published in 1908) T he first book of Prince Edward Island writer Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) gave Canadians an idyllic portrayal of youth and a faithful description of life on the island.
Anne of Green Gables, which enshrined much of the author’s own childhood, has become part of Canadian mythology. In the work, Montgomery tells of Anne, the precocious red-headed orphan-girl whose adventures have been translated into 17 languages and adapted for the screen and theatre. Montgomery went on to publish several successful novels, and received many prestigious awards for her work.
