In 1923, an “unproven, amateur kid” won a place on the Montreal Canadiens. This rookie would quickly become a superstar and, in the eyes of many fans, would overshadow any previous hockey great. In a little less than 14 seasons, Morenz scored 270 goals, and his style made him one of the most beloved players ever. Many who saw the “streak on skates” say they will never forget the immortal name of Morenz.
It was the reckless glamour of his game that, in the end, caused Morenz’s tragic death following a bone-fracturing crash in an NHL (National Hockey League) game on the Montreal Forum ice. As a lasting tribute, Morenz’s number 7 sweater, was permanently retired by his team.
