Greetings! And a hearty welcome to this holiday issue. We hope you enjoy it.

"We" -- the editorial we -- are the people who edit and produce CMAJ. You can see many of us, hard at work, on the following page [not available online]. The rest are in their usual places on the masthead.

But "we" are also the multitude of individuals who submitted manuscripts, served as reviewers, and wrote editorials, letters, poetry, prose and news. Without them all, CMAJ would not exist.

The holiday issue presents 30 short papers grouped under 8 general headings. The authors cheerfully accepted our challenge to write lively "year-end" summaries of developments in their particular fields. Many contributors commented on how much fun they had preparing their articles, freed from the usual constraints of academic writing. Their reviews range from a look at new findings in the genetics of fetal development to reflections on Atom Egoyan's recent staging of the opera Salome, stopping along the way to consider such topics as death and hospital restructuring.

We hope you can find a few minutes during the holidays to tell us what you think of the issue and the Journal. We look forward to hearing from you.--JH
