His daughter stated: "His warm smile, enduring sense of humour, story-reading ability, love of travel and music, and his eternal optimism all combined to make him a wonderful father, grandfather and husband."

Died July 28, 2000, aged 76; survived by his wife, Katrin, and 3 sons. His obituary stated: "He dedicated his life to seeing Estonia, his country of birth, regain its independence. After retirement, he took great pleasure in translating books into Braille and volunteering with the Montreal Association of the Blind.
