What to do with Koigu besides another *#@%! pair of socks?
I combined Koigu with a yarn that has a great scrunchy hand and wonderful matte color depth -- not all yarn can take on the mighty Koigu.

Before you add the ruffles, the scarf looks like another crappy, color-block, mall scarf from, well, let’s say they just signed Madonna for an ad campaign. The Koigu ruffles play off the color, the matte texture & the severity of garter stitch. It becomes this weirdly cool kitten with a whip thing.

You don't have enough Koigu? I’ve seen it done with half the ruffles. Won the lottery or sleeping with your LYS owner? I’ve seen it done with double ruffles all over.

Remember when ruffling, be kind to your wrists & take frequent breaks.

MATERIALS

2 Skeins Koigu
4 Skeins Garnstudio Silke-Tweed, in four colors

2 skeins Koigu, color: #121
1 skein each Garnstudio Silke-Tweed
Colors:
A=02
B=15
C=01
D=21

Colorway #2 [below]
2 skeins Koigu, color: #105
1 skein each Garnstudio Silke-Tweed
Colors:
A=20
B=11
C=23
D=24

Size #3 US Needles

26 stitches = 4" in garter stitch

Cast on 33 stitches with Silke-Tweed color A.  Knit in garter stitch for 30 rows (15 bumps). Switch to Silke-Tweed color B and knit in garter stitch 30 rows (15 bumps).

Repeat with colors C and D.

Repeat four color pattern until scarf measures 76".

Bind off loosely.

Using Koigu, apply garter ruffle to surface and double ruffles at either end.

Weave in ends.

Garter Ruffle:

Pick up 33 stitches between first and second color block.

Row 1: knit

Row 2:  knit into the front and back of every stitch (66 stitches).

Row 3: repeat Row 2 (132 stitches)

Bind off loosely.

Double Ruffle:

These ruffles are knit in stockinette stitch. Be sure to pick up stitches so that the knit stitches correspond to the top of your scarf.

Bottom ruffle:

Pick up 33 stitches on end of scarf.

Row 1: knit

Row 2: purl

Row 3: knit into the front and back of every stitch (66 stitches).

Row 4: purl

Row 5: knit

Row 6: purl

Row 7: repeat Row 3 (132 stitches)

Row 8: purl

Bind off loosely.

Double Ruffle continued:

Top ruffle:

Pick up the same 33 stitches on end of scarf through bottom ruffle.

Row 1: purl

Row 2: knit into the front and back of every stitch (66 stitches).

Row 3: purl

Row 4: knit into the front and back of every stitch (132 stitches).

Row 5: purl

Bind off loosely.
