Importing by Mail

Importing Personal Firearms and Weapons

Before you try to import a personal firearm or weapon by mail, please check carefully to make sure that it is admissible.

Non-restricted firearms, restricted firearms and prohibited handguns may be imported by mail, but you must have the appropriate licence and permit(s), as follows:

• If you’ve purchased a non-restricted or restricted firearm outside Canada that is being imported for the first time, a copy of your Possession and Acquisition Licence and registration certificate for that firearm, as well as an Authorization to Transport (ATT) in the case of a restricted firearm, must accompany the firearm for the CBSA to release your parcel to Canada Post.
• If your firearm is being re-imported into Canada, a copy of your registration certificate, as well as your Possession-Only Licence or Possession and Acquisition Licence must accompany the firearm for the CBSA to release your parcel to Canada Post.
• Prohibited handguns cannot be imported into Canada unless the firearm was previously exported and a valid registration certificate, the licence authorizing that class of firearm, an ATT and an import permit accompany the firearm.

Once the CBSA has released your firearm, Canada Post will deliver your goods and collect the appropriate duty and taxes from you.
