Border Services Officer
You should complete the following self-assessment questionnaire before you apply to become a border services officer at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Some questions are linked to the CBSA's Web site to provide you with more information.
This questionnaire will give you a better idea of what is required and what is expected of a border services officer.
This questionnaire is for your own information only.
Do not forward it with your application.
- Are you at least 18 years of age?
- Do you have the education requirements as indicated on the job advertisement?
Proof of education will be required at the time of the interview.
- Are you willing and able to work various shifts on rotation, on weekends and statutory holidays, and overtime?
- Do you have a valid unrestricted driver's licence or the mobility normally associated with having a driver's licence?
- Do you have experience working with computers and are you comfortable doing so?
- Are you willing to attend the nine-week in-residence recruit training program in Rigaud, Quebec (a weekly allowance of $125 is provided to recruits during the in-residence program)?
- Do you meet the CBSA's physical requirements as indicated in the physical abilities questionnaire?
- Are you prepared to undergo the psychological testing that is required?
- Are you prepared to carry a firearm and use it? Are you prepared to apply as much physical force as necessary when dealing with a non-compliant individual?
- Do you meet the following standards?
- Vision: corrected vision 6/9 in better eye and 6/15 in other eye.
- Hearing: no more than 25 decibel loss (in better ear) at a range between 500-3000 hertz. This standard applies with or without hearing aids.
- Are you willing and able to wear the required uniform, protective clothing (such as a bulletproof vest) and job-related equipment (such as handcuffs, baton, etc.)?
- Are you able to deal with people in a respectful and professional manner under stressful situations?
- Are you scrupulously honest and do you respect the law in both behaviour and attitude?
- When making decisions, do you consider your options and the pros and cons of each one?
- Do you have the self-confidence to be assertive when the situation demands it?
- In the face of uncertainty, can you make necessary decisions?
- Do you enjoy working in a team environment?
- Are you committed to achieving goals?
- Are you comfortable working with people from other cultural backgrounds?
- Can you adjust your behaviour to remain productive through periods of ambiguity, uncertainty and stress?
- Do you take initiative and do you enthusiastically strive to do an outstanding job?
- Are you prepared to work at different locations within an area?
If you answered "YES" to all of the above questions and you feel that you are ready to take on the challenges and responsibilities of a border services officer, apply now.
