The Customs Intelligence Management System

In the past, the Customs intelligence community relied on the manual collection and dissemination of intelligence information. Although, lookouts and alerts are delivered immediately to front line staff through the Integrated Customs Enforcement System, Customs' ability to correlate and share information between regional and national intelligence offices was difficult and time consuming. This hampered the delivery of critical information to frontline officers and partners.

With the implementation of the Customs Intelligence Management System, an online case management and occurrence reporting system has been created. It provides a national repository for intelligence information and allows Customs to better position itself to combat cross border crime, including terrorism, on a national, multi-regional and international basis.

The system will become an integral part of managing the risk at the border. By accelerating the implementation of the system, Customs interdiction capabilities will be significantly enhanced. CCRA intelligence officers will have a state of the art electronic tool to correlate, analyze and distribute information. Customs officers will benefit from the ability to communicate directly with the intelligence community through the occurrence reporting component.

Canada Customs and Revenue Agency is investing an additional $1.3 million to accelerate the implementation of the Customs Intelligence Management System. The Customs Intelligence Management System will provide CCRA with the capability to identify and effectively attend to areas of high risk and is part of our continuing effort to manage the ever-changing threats at Canada's borders.
