Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 4, 2008 - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Port of Halifax have seized over 27 kilos of heroin with an estimated street value of over $11 million.
Border services officers discovered the drugs on October 22, 2008, while searching a marine container bound for Ontario from Pakistan. The container was identified by the CBSA's targeting unit. This unit examines the manifests of all containers arriving in the Port of Halifax and identifies those containers that require a full physical inspection.
Officers searched the marine container and, with the help of X-ray technology, they found 161 packages of suspected heroin in 81 cardboard boxes. In total, 27.8 kilos of drugs were discovered.
The drugs have been turned over to the RCMP for further investigation. If you have any information about this case, or if you have witnessed or are aware of an incident involving suspicious cross-border activity, please contact the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060.
