CBSA seizes another cache of cocaine at Windsor–Detroit border

Windsor, Ontario, March 24, 2009 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ontario, seized 78 kilos of cocaine worth an estimated street value of $9.8 million.

CBSA officers uncovered the drugs on March 19, 2009, during the examination of a tractor-trailer destined for Toronto. The tractor-trailer was carrying a load of oranges and officers found a total of 69 bricks of cocaine inside two orange crates.

A 40-year-old man from Maple, Ontario, has been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with importation of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

CBSA officers work tirelessly to keep illegal drugs and other contraband from entering Canada. Officers in the Windsor–St. Clair region alone seized 456 kilos of cocaine in 2007 and 310 kilos in 2008. These seizures are an important contribution toward keeping Canadian communities safe.

Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border activity is encouraged to call the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060. All calls are completely confidential.
